Importance of REM Sleep – Robert Lindeman

August 22, 2016 by admin

Robert Lindeman has been studying sleep cycles of a variety of individuals for years.

As a sleep consultant, Lindeman works to ensure all of his clients are receiving the best night sleep possible. One of the most important aspects of the sleep cycle is REM sleep.

robert lindeman rem sleep

Making up approximately 20% of your nightly sleep, REM sleep is a portion of the sleep cycle during which the brain is particularly active, even possibly more active than it is while awake. REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement and, as the name suggests, is associated with intermittent and rapid side-to-side movement of the closed eyes. The reason for the eye movement is under some debate with the most common explanation being that the movement is related to the visual images the brain produces while in the REM phase of the sleep cycle.

A lot happens to the brain and body while in REM sleep. As already mentioned, dreaming is typically associated with REM sleep but not any type of dreams. During REM sleep, a person’s dreams are likely to be more vivid and therefore more memorable. However, due to what is referred to as muscular atonia, the body goes through temporary muscle paralysis. Researchers along with Robert Lindeman suggest that this is built-in to protect ourselves from the would be movements our brain would signal for our body to do during these vivid dreams. Some people don’t experience the paralysis that typically occurs during REM sleep. This is referred to as REM behavior disorder and though it can take many forms it is best known as sleepwalking.

There are four stages of the sleep cycle and a typical person can go through the cycle 4 or 5 times each time they sleep. The first stage is the shortest and it is characterized by sleeping very lightly. It typically only lasts for 5 to 10 minutes. The second stage is also a light sleep but your heart starts to slow and your temperature drops. This is your body preparing for deep sleep. During the third stage, and the last before REM sleep, you are already in a deep sleep from which it can be more difficult to wake from. The final stage is REM sleep and it can account for 90 to 120 minutes of an entire night of sleep. After REM sleep, the cycle would start over with the first stage. Interestingly, a newborn baby spends up to 80% of their sleep time in the REM portion of the cycle. Typically, the first time you enter into REM sleep, it is a much shorter period of time then the subsequent cycles and the period of time increases with each cycle.

Generally, when a person does not reach the REM portion of the sleep cycle, there are actually few consequences with the most severe being an inability to learn complex tasks. This lends itself as possible explanation for why a young person would spend 4 times as long in REM sleep as an adult as there is a lot of information for a young person to process at the end of a day. However, if a person is deprived of REM sleep, they are likely to reach REM sleep quicker the next time they sleep as well as spend more time in that portion of the cycle.

Benefits of a Good Night’s Sleep

July 27, 2016 by admin

For many years, Robert Lindeman has worked as a professional sleep consultant, helping people of all ages improve their health and reap the benefits of a good night’s sleep.

How many times do you wake up realizing that you only had a couple hours of sleep? The reality is that a majority of people out there today struggle with being tired all of the time. People are not getting an adequate amount of sleep. This is such an epidemic that people face it by joking, saying things like “sleep is for the weak” or “I’ll sleep when I’m dead”. What most people do not realize is that there are so many benefits to getting a good night’s sleep. Below, Robert Lindeman describes some of the major benefits of obtaining enough hours of regular, healthy sleep.

Benefits of a Good Nights Sleep - Robert Lindeman

  • Overall Better Health

Studies are continually telling people that getting the right amount of sleep is so great for your health. By getting a better night’s sleep, people can have a decreased chance in health problems like obesity, heart problems and diabetes. Studies have also shown an increase in your immunity if you get the right amount of sleep.

  • Reduction in Pain

Some studies have shown that people who sleep better at night may see a reduction in their chronic pain. Robert Lindeman has relieved many patients from chronic pain with just some simple advice about proper sleeping habits.

  • Better Memory

There have been links to a person’s memory and the amount that they sleep. If you find that you are pretty forgetful, you should try getting more sleep. In fact, studies have also shown that the brain actually practices skills during your sleep, including strengthening your memory.

  • Better Mood

Admit it: most people are a bit cranky when they are tired. There is a reason for that. When you don’t sleep enough you have a more difficult time with your emotional regulation, making it more difficult to control your bad mood.

  • Longer Life

Studies show that people who get the right amount of sleep will actually live longer on average than those people who sleep too much or too little.

  • Better Cognitive Ability

Sleep and your ability to think are definitely linked. This means that if you don’t sleep enough, you are not going to be able to think very clearly. By getting enough sleep, you will have more attention and will be better able to think. You will get better grades and be a better problem solver at work.

Working alongside the American Sleep Association, Robert Lindeman has gained great insight on how sleep not only benefits our brains and cognitive abilities, but also leads to lower chances of developing serious sleep disorders.

  • More Creativity

This is especially important for those people who require their creativity for their careers. More sleep leaves more energy and room in the mind for creative exercises.

  • Better Athleticism

If you are an athlete or someone who works out regularly, getting a better night’s sleep will help to improve your performance. By sleeping around 10 hours a night, you will gain a simple competitive edge over someone who had less sleep.

  • Healthier Weight

There have been links between obesity and not getting enough sleep. By sleeping better at night, you are going to have an easier time maintaining a healthy weight. Sleeping well actually improves your metabolism.

The health benefits of getting a good night’s sleep are numerous. Everyone needs a good night’s sleep to function better and to have a better quality of life.

A Look Into the Creative Minds of the Coen Brothers

June 27, 2016 by admin

Robert Lindeman holds a great interest in art and culture, particularly with films and movies. His favorite filmmakers of all time are The Coen Brothers.

The Coen Brothers

If there is any particular artist that can tug on emotions you weren’t sure you had or take you on an emotional roller coaster in a span of an hour and a half, it is a filmmaker. While there have been many that have left legacies and provided us with exceptional work to enjoy, there is a duo in particular that are well worth our appreciation: The Coen Brothers.

Born on November 29th, 1954 and September 21, 1957 in the great city of St. Louis, Minnesota, Joel David Coen and Ethan Jesse Coen have worked together on more than fifteen films. These two brothers found a passion for filmmaking at an early age and have worked hard to create breathtaking work since then. As children, the Coen brothers recreated movies they saw on TV after the purchase of their first camera – a Vivitar Super 8. After studying in the undergraduate film program at New York University, Joel began working as a production assistant, later gaining experience in film editing with which he found great success.

This continued to fuel the passion each of the brothers had for film creation, paving the way for the creation of their first commercial film – Blood Simple, which they made together in 1984. After this first film, the brothers went along to create fan favorites that included Raising Arizona, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, The Big Lebowski, Hail! Cesar, True Grit, and Fargo.

Their exceptional talent is exemplified through the special recognition they have received for a number of the films mentioned above. First case in point – Fargo. This movie was nominated for seven Oscars, taking home best actress and best original screenplay. Likewise, and even more impressive are the 10 Oscar nominations that True Grit received at the 83rd Academy Awards. Another incredible recognition they have received is the addition of The Big Lebowski to the National Film Registry in 2014 by the Library of Congress.

It is no doubt that the talent of the Coen brothers is exceptional. The contribution they have made to this generation of film is one that has left an impact on both film-watchers and other filmmakers. If it is not already exemplified by the ample recognition they have received, perhaps their talent could be further appreciated when considering the fact that their films have busted genres, impacting those of comedy, crime, horror, thriller, Western, and beyond. They are a true exemplification of artistry in filmmaking and their passion is without a doubt inspirational in this industry. The Coen brothers have already and will surely continue to leave a legacy by the amazing, diverse, emotional pictures they create.

The 90s Yankees: An Underrated Dynasty

May 23, 2016 by admin

While currently living in New England, Robert Lindeman was born and raised a New York Yankees fan. He loves the history of the team and enjoys going to a few games a year with family and friends.

In sports, there is one word when a team wins multiple championships within a certain era. We call those teams that accomplish that feat a dynasty. Every time you hear the word dynasty, which teams do you think of? You think of the Chicago Bulls with their NBA six titles in the ‘90s, the New England Patriots with their four Super Bowl titles in the 2000s and 2010s, the San Francisco 49ers with five Super Bowl titles in the ‘80s and ‘90s, the San Antonio Spurs with their five NBA titles in the ‘90s, 2000s and 2010s.

And, most recently the Chicago Blackhawks with their three Stanley Cup crowns in the past five years as well as the San Francisco Giants with their three World Series titles in the past five years. All of those teams, players, coaches and managers have accomplished a rare goal that many players and coaches dream of. But, it seems that there is one team that gets lost in the shuffle when it comes to being mentioned with those teams: the New York Yankees.

History of the NYY - Robert Lindeman
96 Yankees

Between 1996 and 2000, the Bronx Bombers managed to win four World Series Championships under then manager Joe Torre. They also pulled off a three-peat from 1998 to 2000. Different players from those teams were named World Series MVP in each title: Mariano Rivera (1999 World Series MVP), John Wetteland (1996 World Series MVP), Scott Brosius (1998 World Series MVP) and Derek Jeter (2000 World Series MVP). They had an excellent pitching staff in Andy Pettitte, Wetteland, Kenny Rogers, David Wells, Orlando Hernandez and Roger Clemons as well as future Hall of Fame catcher Jorge Posada to catch those balls and strikes behind home plate.

Also, you knew when Rivera stepped out on the mound in the 9th inning; he was going to close the door on the game. The ‘90s Yankee teams had great defensive players in shortstop Jeter, third baseman Brosius, and center fielder Bernie Williams (1996 ALCS MVP). Plus, they always knew how to hit in the clutch with players such as David Justice (2000 ALCS MVP), Jeter, Williams and Darryl Strawberry in his later years.

Maybe the reason why the ‘90s New York Yankee teams don’t get the credit they deserve because they were a victim of their talent. They had so many great players on those teams that everyone expected to the Yankees to win the World Series or at least be in the World Series every year. They also had the MLB on lockdown for five years. There is a lot of praise for the ‘90s Atlanta Braves but they only won one World Series title. The Yankees during that time did something that a few teams have ever done, which is winning multiple championships in a certain time period. The ‘90s New York Yankees are one of the most underrated dynasties not only in Major League Baseball but in sports in general.

The Life of James Taylor, Blues Musician

March 23, 2016 by admin

As a music lover and avid listener of Blue’s music, Robert Lindeman has always been a James Taylor fan. When he was just twelve years old, Robert Lindeman received the album, James Taylor’s Greatest Hits, and has been hooked ever since. James Taylor is one of the best-selling artists of all time. He has a unique and challenging history that has brought him to the great success he has today.

James Taylor - Robert Lindeman

Early Life and Family

James Taylor was born on the 12th March 1948 to Isaac M.Taylor and Gertrude Taylor (Woodard). His mother had a musical background having studied vocals with Marie Sudelius at the Conservatory of Music in New England. Before she married James father she sang opera. At the tender age of three James started to learn the cello but switched to playing the guitar in the 1960’s. His influences back then were Woody Guthrie and hymns and carols. He continued to play guitar but used a style of finger picking to emulate a piano. He met Danny Kotchmar at Martha’s Vineyard where he and his family often visited for holidays away. Kotchmar already an aspiring guitarist and Taylor listened to a lot of blues music and folk music where Kotchmar played the guitar and Taylor sang. This was where his vocal talents were first recognised and both went on to create their own music. It was at 14 that Taylor started to write his own music creating his first guitar song. By 1963 both young boys were playing regularly at coffeehouses at their summer location and were nicknamed Jamie and Kootch.

Education and Mental Health

The pressure of his college caused Taylor’s mental state to decline despite the fact he was academically doing well. This made him less motivated to meet his goals and as a result led to him returning to his home town in North Carolina to continue his education at high school instead. There he joined a band that his brother had made which was later known as The Fabulous Corsairs. The band went on to make a single that included a song that James had written called ‘Cha Cha Blues. Afterwards Taylor returned to Milton so that he could finish his final year and began applying to colleges. His mental health at that point declined further with him sleeping around 20 hours every day. He felt totally out of control with his life and was admitted to the McLean Hospital for treatment and structure to his life. The hospital had an associated school where Taylor got his high school diploma.

Early Career

After checking himself out of the hospital Taylor was then urged by Kortchmar to move to New York where they both formed a band with Joel O’Brien and Zachary Wiesner called The Flying Machine. Taylor had written songs about his stay in Mclean including ‘Round the Zoo’ and The Blues is just a bad dream’.  The songs were performed regularly at Night Owl Café which was a high visibility venue in Greenwich. It wasn’t long before Taylor began to hang around with people who were heavily into heroin and unfortunately began to take it himself. The song ‘Paint it Black’ was heavily influenced by his experience as a drug user. Later that year in 1966 the group made a single called ‘brighten your Night with my Day’ which was released by Gee Records. It only reached 102 nationally but was played on the radio in the Northeast. Unfortunately after a few failing appearances for which they never received payment the band broke up. After money ran dry and his addiction spiraled out of control he rang his family for help and received treatment. He then began a new career alone in London where his songs were played to Beatles members George and Paul McCartney. It was after hearing his voice and guitar playing talent that he was the first ever act that was not originally from Britain to receive a signing from Apple.
